Autism Spectrum Disorders

It is easy to think that everyone sees and processes the world around us just like we do; however, that is not always the case. We become concerned and upset when we see behaviors, emotions, or social interactions that don’t fit into what we think is normal. Especially when it deals with our own kids.

The term “Autism Spectrum Disorder” (ASD) replaced the term autism and its various categories (e.g., Autistic Disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder). ASD is a commonly seen childhood disorder that can involve problems with social skills and interactions, communication, and/or behavioral regulation skills. The level of severity can vary for each individual, and multiple criteria must be assessed for a diagnosis to be made. Individuals with ASD may struggle in the areas of social behavior and understanding, restricting of behavior, unique play, and/or difficulty with speech and language.

Graven and Associates assists with obtaining a clear diagnosis through psychological or neuropsychological testing for autism to assist with early intervention and treatment planning. Once the diagnosis is clarified, treatment may consist of, but not be limited to, behavioral modification, academic accommodations, family therapy, individual therapy, medication management, occupational therapy, speech therapy, social skills development, and/or dietary adjustments.
