What is the difference between a psychologist, neuropsychologist, and psychiatrist?
A psychologist focuses on cognitive, emotional, physical, and social behavior. They typically provide mental health services to patients in hospitals, clinics, schools, and private practices through psychological assessment and/or therapy. Psychologists are not able to prescribe medication; however, they generally work with medical doctors and psychiatrists to meet a patient’s medicinal needs.
A neuropsychologist is a psychologist with further training in clinical neuropsychology. This means that they focus on cognitive functioning (i.e., memory, language, attention). They typically provide mental health services to patients in hospitals, clinics, and private practices through detailed neuropsychogical assessment to detect effects of brain dysfunction. Neuropsychologists are not able to prescribe medication; however, they generally work with medical doctors and psychiatrists to meet a patient’s medicinal needs.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has also completed training in mental health. Psychiatrists generally prescribe medication for mental health issues and use other treatment providers (i.e., psychologists) for therapy. However, some psychiatrists may provide therapy.
How quickly can I get scheduled for an initial appointment?
Generally, our providers are able to see new patients within 1-2 weeks.
How long are sessions?
Most intake and therapy sessions last 45 to 60 minutes.
Can I do an evaluation on the same day as my initial appointment?
Evaluations are typically not able to be conducted on the same day as the initial appointment due to insurance issues and/or time constraints.
When can I schedule an evaluation?
As soon as a patient has completed their initial appointment, a plan can be made to schedule an evaluation depending upon the type of insurance plan.
When can I obtain the results of my evaluation?
Approximately one to two weeks after testing is complete, your provider meets with you and provides feedback and a written report to discuss results, diagnosis, and recommendations. Patients can generally expect the entire process (including initial session, evaluation, and feedback) to take approximately 3-4 weeks.
How often do I need to come for therapy?
If therapy is recommended, patients typically have counseling every one to two weeks to focus on needs identified during the initial session. Once symptoms start improving, then appointments can be spaced out. Most intake and therapy sessions last 45 to 60 minutes.
Who can you talk to about my mental health concerns and evaluation results?
With written consent from the patient, the provider will collaborate with other providers and significant individuals in the patient’s life to help improve symptoms. The only exception is if a patient is a danger to themselves or others or if ordered by a court of law.
